Which shoes work best for swollen feet and ankles?
Swelling (Edema) in feet and ankles is the result of excess fluid accumulation in tissues, and can be caused by medication, diabetes, pregnancy, or an underlying health issues – such as congestive heart failure, kidney or liver disease, or blockage in a leg veins.
Swelling can be also caused by sitting of standing for prolong periods of time, or even from eating too much of salty foods.
It is very hard to find shoes for swollen feet, and while using regular running shoes or slippers that you can somewhat squeeze into is possible, it can lead to all sorts of issues – such as tripping, falling, twisting ankles, blisters, corns and much more.
Here are shoe features to look for when choosing footwear for swollen feet:
- Width: extra volume and width will create comfortable environment for toes and prevent pressure points
- Adjustability: look for shoes that are easily adjustable during the day. Velcro® or buckle closure straps are ideal.
- Stretchy fabrics: they will allow some stretch, as the swelling may increase as the day progresses.
- Removable insoles / Double removable insoles: shoes with removable insoles allow for fit customization as required, as well as accommodate custom-made orthotics or any optional insoles.
- Lightweight: this will prevent tripping and falling and will not add any noticeable weight to already swollen and heavy feet.
- Outsole: PU or EVA outsoles will provide additional cushioning, durability and traction
